Tony's cousin got married a couple weeks ago and they asked me to do their cake. They got married in Logan, UT and then had an open house in Pocatello, ID the following week. That cake traveled from Rexburg, ID to Logan, UT to Pocatello, Id and it traveled pretty well. With the exception of two little girls who got a hold of the cake in transit. We patched it up and managed to make it look good once again.
Getting started. The entire cake was a dummy cake. A real cake just wouldn't have traveled that much very well. I spent each nap time the day before the cake was to be picked up kneading and dying the fondant, and making and dying the frosting so that everything would be ready for assembling and decorating at bedtime.
I stayed up until 2:00 a.m. to work on the cake that night. The cake took a total of 10 hours to do. I did all the decorating after my kids went to bed because I wanted to get the whole thing done without any distractions from my little ones. I knew the constant "can I help?" or "can I watch?" would have gotten really annoying after awhile. I was tired the next morning, but I was happy with the outcome.
Each tier of the cake ready for transit.
The finished product!
When ever I get someone ask me to do their wedding cake I'm always a bit apprehensive. I know how important it is to each Bride to have their wedding just as they imagined, and I don't want my cake to not live up to their expectations. Thankfully after I'm done with each cake I'm very pleased with the result and my brides are usually thrilled also. I think this one turned out especially well. With each cake I do, my confidence level goes up a little more. Maybe one day I'll be brave enough to do customer cakes again...maybe.
